Croatians look for ski and sun for their winter holidays

Early January saw a boost in ski getaways for Croatians as a result of the extended break and bank holiday.

Many Croatians are thought to take holidays in Croatia itself, but for those seeking something more adventurous the destinations of Austria, France, Italy and Slovenia have all been popular according to the Croatian Times.

However, winter season is still a popular time for many tourists to visit Croatia itself, with much to see and do outside of the summer weather. Interestingly, if you are looking to visit and include some winter ski activities, there are some destinations in Croatia that offer this!

Skiing in Croatia

The Croatia Tourist board lists 3 ski destinations in the country. They are:

The Bjelolasica Croatian Olympic Centre

With a 25 hectare ski area and 10km skiing length, this is Croatias largest ski centre with a cable car, ski lifts and a restaurant for taking a well earned break. Up to 2,500 skiers can take part at any one time, with a peak of 1,410m above sea level.

Platak Ski Resort

Platak Ski Resort is located to the north of Rijeka and offers skiers a large slope using artificial snow when the real snow is not available. Situated in an area with much to see and do, many tourists stay here to enjoy the winter activity as well as seeing some of the local sights such as the local astronomy centre, stunning beaches and the many local parks and forests.

Medvednica Mountain Ski Slopes

Situated about 20 minutes outside of the capital city of Zagreb you will find this mountain range. According to their website they hold several ski competitions around the year as well as having 3 slopes to choose from and the opportunity to ski in the night should you wish!

So it seems Croatia has many activities to offer besides those we already know are available in the summer months, and as I have mentioned before the winter season in the region can make it a beautiful place to visit!

Dubrovnik considers "City Card" for Tourists

I mentioned on here some time ago that Croatia is seeing a boost in its tourist numbers and it seems some authorities in Dubrovnik might be considering cashing in on their arrival.

The Old Town area in Dubrovnik is one of the most popular destinations for anyone enjoying a holiday in Croatia and offers some of the most stunning views available in the country.

However the Croatian Press has reported that the head of a group of local travel agencies says authorities are considering charging for a “city card” allowing access to the area.

The travel agency group says this might discourage tourists and is concerned about the potential effect this may have on the industry in Dubrovnik. However, the authorities say the City Card will not charge an entrance fee, but will help increase tourist numbers by offering discounts in areas such as museums, tours and galleries that will make it a worthwhile purchase.

Dubrovnik ideas

I certainly wouldn’t let this put me off of travelling to Dubrovnik, an area that is widely thought to be one of the most beautiful on the Adriatic coastline.

A brief search online gives an array of things to do and see (many of which are free) while you are visiting the area.

Dubrovnik Coastline

Walking to the top of Mount Srd is said to be one of the best ways to see Dubrovnik itself. The hill stands at more than 400 metres and showcases some of the area’s most beautiful scenery. The walk takes around 90 minutes and is pretty hard going, but the views make it worthwhile. Be sure to start at a suitable time to avoid the hottest the weather has to offer!

A trip to Banje Beach is also worthwhile. Although there is an abundance of coastline in Croatia, much of it is not lined with beaches, so taking the opportunity to bathe or top up your tan here is a must. The beach is very close to old town and plays host to a restaurant and cafe too!

Luza square is the location where you will find some of Dubrovniks most treasured buildings such as Sponza Palace, St Blaise Church and the Bell Tower. The area also plays host to many festivals and events during the year and is a popular and simple to find meeting place.

Dubrovnik celebrates busy season

As predicted, the 2011 holiday season has been one of the busiest on record for holidays in Dubrovnik and Croatia as a whole.

The city (known as the Adriatic Jewel) celebrated the end of the tourist season with a huge party in its centre and for a token payment of around 2 Euros locals were able to sample foods from restaurants based in the Straden.

Dubrovnik Coastline

Dubrovnik has won several awards this year as a favourite tourist destination and UK newspapers and celebrities have been full of praise for the area as a holiday hotspot.

For locals it is still a medieval town with a traditional culture and warm climate, for tourists there is so much more to it and is certainly a region of croatia that should be visited on any Adriatic holiday. Sunny and warm weather can be expected from April to late October so swimming and coastal visits at this time of year are a must.

What's on in Dubrovnik

If you are thinking of visiting Dubrovnik next year there are already events planned that you may want to consider.

During the early high season of April the Libertas Film Festival comes to town. A popular for locals and tourists alike, the event lasts for a week and focuses on movies from European Directors. Cinemas all around the area take part and some cinemas create outdoor theatres for movie lovers to watch a film in the evening sun.

July is the most popular time to visit and (in part) this is because of the annual "Dubrovnik Festival" - a selection of shows and events are put on throughout the town at various venues until late August. Many shows are open air and given at some of Dubrovniks most popular landmarks. Tickets sell out quickly but a selection of free street performances also take place regularly, so there really is something for all to enjoy.

However, if you are more interested in seeing the country well outside of the tourist season, then maybe a festive break could be for you?

From mid December, Dubrovniks Sponza Palace is transformed into a christmas village where locals sell festive gift ideas, local food and drinks beside the sparkling christmas lights and carol singers.

Whenever you do decide to visit, be sure to book your tickets as early as possible as if this year is anything to go by then Croatia will be a busy country in 2012.

In my experience, tour operators and travel agents see a spike in bookings in the New Year and I believe that is why the prices seem to be different around that time too.

However, booking even further in advance might be a better way forward and this includes Holidays in Croatia for 2012, which are expected to be even higher next year after the celebrity boom there in 2011 (see previous posts for more information on this).

Croatia is a beautiful country and there have been many activities and events there in recent months, some of which are a useful feature of a holiday. In recent weeks even Britney Spears has used a social networking site to thank her fans that visited her concert in the country’s’ capital, Zagreb.

The capital is also currently playing host to the local Film Festival, which is a popular celebrity event and is likely to attract visitors from far and wide.

But there are many other things to see and do in Croatia, including some “must see” events for 2012. I have already seen adverts for concerts from Sade, Tom Jones and Chris Rea – all popular international artists.

But besides this there are many activities to take part in and some stunning scenery that can only be described as “once in a lifetime” to make your visit extra special. Locations such as Plitvice Lakes are well worth a visit and other world heritage sites are there too such as the Roman Amphitheatre in the Split region.

Usain Bolt breaks records in Croatia!

August and September are amongst the most popular months for a Holiday in Croatia, but many people were able to take further advantage of events in the country this year following an influx of sporting schedules, concerts and theatrical entertainment taking place there.

I read an article recently confirming that Usain Bolt has just run his fastest lap of the season at the Stadion SRC Mladost just outside Croatias capital city of Zagreb. His time of 9.85 seconds for the 100m was recorded as his fastest in 2011 and is highly significant following his disqualification from the World Championship Final last month and if you were on holiday in Croatia at the time what a fantastic event to have the opportunity to see.

Zagreb in Croatia

Zagreb is a cultural hub in Croatia with many people travelling there to take in some of the amazing entertainment on offer.

The Croatian National Theatre is a popular destination. Built in 1895 it was a project for Vienesse Architects and the exterior of the building itself should be given due consideration before you even see a show. Most commonly the Zagreb National Theatre shows Drama, Opera and Ballet and tickets can be booked online as well as through your travel agent to avoid disappointment.

Zagreb Arena is also a popular destination where you will find many of the countrys major concerts being held. The arena was only finished in 2008 and is home to many sports, business and entertainment events. During the next few weeks alone you can attend see George Michael, attend a Beauty Show and see Britney Spears on world tour.

There are also many museums to visit in the city (as well as around the country) that have various exhibits to enjoy. Current exhibition include Egyptian artefacts and natural history.

Of course many people choose to tour Croatia because there is so much to see and do throughout the whole country. So, if you only have a short time in the area it might be worth joining in on a walking tour. These are normally organised in a similar way to the bus tours we are used to in our major cities, but cover much of the areas famous landmarks and architecture.

Adriatic Island to host a Royal Holiday?

Well I mentioned it on here before and now it looks like there may still be a British Royal visit to Croatia. Although they didn't choose the country as their honeymoon destination, it is hoped that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are going to be taking a holiday in Croatia in the future.

Croatia Holiday by the Harbour

A local paper reported earlier in August that the mayor of the island of Rab had received a letter from Buckingham Palace, although its exact contents are said to be thanking the mayor for his invitation at the time of their honeymoon.

Of course, Kate and William will be following in the footsteps of their ancestors - King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson came to Croatia for a royal break and (according to reports) introduced nudism after sunbathing in the nude during their visit!

So if you are thinking of following the trend and visiting the island of Rab, what are the main attractions?

There are many activities to take part in, many of which center around the beautiful blue coastline. Sea Kayaking is a popular choice with so much to see and explore whilst you enjoy the trip. Like many other areas of Croatia, there are also excellent walking tours to take part in within the town, with lots of opportunities to take some photos of the stunning scenery. Architecture has always been a big draw for tourists in Croatia and Rab is no exception to this rule. Many people take the time to see the old town areas and take in the mediterannian painted buldings that wander around the paths and roadways.

And as I have said on here many times before, Croatia is a vast area with so much stunning country to see, so why not take in several of the most popular destinations whilst you are there? These include:

One of the other more popular passtimes in Croatia is sailing as the calm glistening waters make it an ideal place to spend a day or your entire holiday.

Sailing holidays are available in a variety of ways and can even be combined with a land based hotel so you get the best of both worlds whilst you are away.

However, with tourist numbers in Croatia currently at a high I would strongly recommend booking as early as possible to avoid dissappointment. This includes your flights, hotels, excursions and event tickets as they are likely to get very busy very quickly.

I was pleased to find this report recently confirming the rise in Holidays to Croatia. It seems that tourism is up 8% in the country so far this year and apparantly this is expected to rise.

Of course this is no surprise to me, having enjoyed the scenery and activities in this country for so long I have been compelled to write this blog about it.

So I have come up with a few new attractions to visit if you are one of the 11 million people that are travelling to the Adriatic this year!

Dubrovnik - Cable Car

Dubrovnik Coastline

Dubrovnik is one of the most popular places to visit in Croatia, with its old town charm and coastal regions seemingly unspoilt, you can spend many an hour watching the world go by in a cate or terrace of an inn. But waht better way to see the region than from above? Dubrovnik Cable Car was reopened recently and gives visitors the opportunity to see the old town from 405m. The trip only take a few minutes, but there will be plenty of picture opportunities along the way.

Split - Diocletians Palace

I might have mentioned this building before, but I can't stress enough how beautiful this ruined Roman Palace is. In this area the new and old live together and people live in houses which delicately weave their way around the boundary and within the buildings cellar is a market selling jewellery, wooden sailing ships and leather goods.

Zagreb - Jarun Lake

Take a 5 - 10 minute bus journey out of Zagreb to find the shining blue waters of Zagreb Lake. The locals commonly visit here during the summer months as it is an ideal place to enjoy a leisurely swim or hire a pedalo for a bit more fun!

To be honest, it doesn't matter which region of Croatia these 11 million people are visiting - there is plenty to see and do wherever you go.

Croatia Holidays to be effected by joining the EU?

As many people now know, it looks likely that Croatia will become part of the EU in the July 2013 and I have read with great interest the opinions for and against the idea.

From my perspective, I wonder if Croatia Holidays will be effected by the changes and whether it will give more people the opportunity to spend time in the stunning Dalmatia region.

Looking at the history of joining the EU, many European holiday destinations ( places such as Greece and Portugal come to mind) have struggled after joining the EU and many would say it has had a detremental effect on society there. Of course, they are not alone - whilst the UK itself is a member of the EU we have chosen not to adopt the Euro currency, a choice that many people believe can be the downfall of other countries. Is it possible that Croatia may suffer the same fate?

However, despite the arguments both for and against, tourist numbers have steadily increased to the region in recent years and we can only hope this is a trend that will continue once the country becomes the 28th EU member. It is difficult to say whether this is good or bad timing for the country, I only hope that it benefits from any changes as a result of joining.

Croatia Holiday Excursions - Diving

We have talked a lot on here about the various places to visit in whilst on your Croatia Holiday, however after reading a recent news article I thought I would focus this week on one excursion in particular that is becoming very popular - diving.

Earlier this week the Croatian Times reported that a diver has recently been lucky enough to spot a 10 metre whale off the coast of Istria in Cervar Port.

Interestingly, tourists have been enjoying diving in this region since the 1950's, but the activity has become more popular in the last 10 years and as a result you will find a diving school, excursions and equipment at most coastal regions.

Croatian Zoo to get Makeover

It has been reported recently that a Zoo in Zagreb has submitted a request for construction of new facilities for some of its animals.

Zagreb Zoo is located within the popular tourist destination of Zagreb and is more than 200 years old. It is home to many wonderful animals including Kangaroos, Armadillos, Bats, Lemurs, Monkeys, Gibbons, Wolves, Otters, Bears, Zebra, Lions , Hippopotamus, Porcupine, Herons, Parrots and much much more.

The zoo is within the Maksimir Park in the city Centre and covers around 5.5 hectares of land – it is home to nearly 300 different species of animal and is enjoyed by tourists and locals alike all year round.

Croatian Coffee Shop gives away iPads!

A coffee shop in Croatia is currently offering free iPads to its patrons.

The cafe in Split has stopped providing customers with a daily paper, instead offering them an iPad to peruse the days news.

The devices are fitted with a security alarm to alert shop workers if one is taken away from its associated table.

The Croatian town of Split is known for being more modern than some of its other more traditional towns – it is also a very popular tourist destination with more than 10 million people visiting in 2010.
If you are thinking of visiting Croatia there are lots of things to see and do near the area of Split besides the cosmopolitan shopping and al fresco dining they are well known for.

Krka National Park
Krka is one of Croatias national parks and is named after the Krka river, which is within the park itself.
